St Peter School hosts anti-tobacco awareness drive

Dimapur, May 18 (MExN): A comprehensive awareness programme on the harmful effects of Tobacco was held at St Peter School, Toulazouma, on May 17. It was organised by the Intern Cohort from St Joseph University (SJU) under the auspices of Can Youth, in collaboration with the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP).

A key session was led by Imkumla, a Psychologist from NTCP, who provided a detailed presentation on various forms of tobacco, including e-cigarettes, and their detrimental impact on health. She highlighted the concerning statistic that Nagaland has a 43.3% tobacco usage rate, contributing to over 700 new cancer cases annually. Visual aids were used effectively to illustrate these health risks.

Dr Moa Jamir, Nodal Officer of the District Tobacco Control Unit, led an engaging Anti-Tobacco Pledge, encouraging all participants to commit to a tobacco-free way of life. The programme concluded with a valuable free oral health screening for the students, conducted by Dr Jamir and his medical team, further emphasizing the tangible health consequences of tobacco use.

The event saw participation from 92 students and 12 teachers of St Peter School, along with five interns from SJU, two representatives from Can Youth, and 3 officials from NTCP, stated a press release issued by Nuye Nyekha, Program Manager, Can Youth.
