The State’s department of Forests, Ecology, Environment and Wildlife stated that the usage and preservation of medicinal plants amongst the Nagas have been a part of the social and cultural life, which has been passed on from generation to generation. Geographically, an altitudinal variation ranging from 194m to 3048m and a vast undulating landscape and terrain makes the region conducive for a luxuriant growth of plant species, the department said in a pamphlet received here.
The state has rich natural resources of flora and fauna and is located at one of the biodiversity hot spots in the world with a vast potential for judicious exploitation and utilization of natural resources, it said, “The wealth of our state lie before our very own eyes to be abundantly utilized for the well-being of the citizens,” the department said adding that the potentiality in exploration and conservation of our medicinal plant wealth has in many ways been linked to the exclusive usage and preservation of indigenous knowledge on medicines.
Of late there has been a surge in the usage of herbal medicinal plants due to its non toxic nature with reference to side effect on different parts of the body. Special attention is given due to the high therapeutic value of some plants, which has an enormous potential of being used in different medicinal systems, it said adding, “We have documented very limited quantity of our forest wealth in spite of this wealth lying at our doorsteps.” The values of medicinal plants remained confined to the developing countries for long but recently its popularity has been spread so widely that in some cases it is preferred to chemical control of diseases, in developed countries as well, the pamphlet added.
