International Workers’ Day observed in Dimapur
DIMAPUR, MAY 1 (MExN): The Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID), with support from the National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM), Nagaland Region, commemorated International Workers’ Day on May 1 at the Assisi Auditorium under the theme “Safety and Health of Workers.” The event sought to honour the dignity, rights, and contributions of workers across various sectors.
In her welcome address, Sr Elizabeth Pramila, Director of ACID and Coordinator of NDWM, Nagaland Region emphasized the importance of acknowledging the value of every worker and urged the gathering to celebrate the day with joy and gratitude. She also welcomed the resource persons, Advocate Priya Shyam and Sr Sunita Miranda, UFC Provincial Councillor.
The event proceeded with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the invited guests, along with the president and two members of the Domestic Workers’ Society (DWS).
Sr Sunita Miranda conducted a session on failure management, drawing parallels between overcoming failure and the resilience of a child learning to walk. She addressed the importance of mental well-being and explained the role of the brain’s frontal cortex in managing emotions and thoughts. Her message encouraged attendees to express their feelings, maintain a positive outlook, and nurture hope.
Advocate Priya Shyam spoke on the theme of the day, stressing the importance of ensuring safe and healthy working conditions for all workers. She emphasized that every job—whether in education, domestic work, or industrial labor—deserves dignity and fair treatment. Her session covered workers’ rights, including minimum wages, equal pay, workplace safety, access to healthcare, and social security. She also highlighted the issue of child labour and underscored the right of every child to education.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Asela Sangtam, who expressed appreciation to all participants, guests, and organizers for their contributions to the success of the event.
Nearly 85 individuals attended the programme, which served as a strong reminder of the need to uphold the rights, safety, and well-being of workers in every field.
