Dimapur, September 3 (MExN): The Department of Land Resources in convergence with Rural Development Department (RD) has commenced activities under the “multi-stakeholder initiative to provide drinking water security through Springshed Management in 100 rural villages” of Nagaland at full swing.
A press release issued by the Land Resources, Dimapur stated that the Springshed Development Programme in the state will function in convergence with three entities namely- Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) which will assist in the capacity of a funding agency, the North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA) to render coordination support and the Department of Land Resources (LRD) as the implementing agency for Nagaland whose core objective would be to lay stress on providing drinking water security through the rejuvenation of springs.
In total, eight villages have been listed under the Springshed Development Programme for Dimapur district. The list of villages includes Ruzaphema, Bungsang, Molvum, Toshezu, Kiyevi ‘A’, Tsiepama, Pherima and Medziphema.
The Department of Land Resources, Dimapur division commenced activities under the Springshed Development Programme at Ruzaphema village on September 2. The team spearheaded by its District Project Officer I. Acato Chishi conducted a sensitization programme on Springshed Management at the village council hall which saw a healthy participation from the village elders, members of the youth community and District staff.
DPO Acato while addressing the gathering, laid stress on community participation and efficient coordination for the successful implementation of the programme.
With major emphasis being laid on creating awareness about Water Scarcity, access to clean drinking water and the importance of preserving existing springs, a brief presentation was given by Lenin Girisa (Watershed Development Team Member, LRD Dimapur).
This was followed by a visit to two major springs of Ruzaphema village for the purpose of conducting Spring Inventorization which included activities such as- the collection of water sample for water quality testing, slope measurement to determine the feasibility of constructing engineering structures, calculation of present water discharge rate from the springs and identification of recharge areas.
The Department of Land Resources, Dimapur division would be conducting the rest of its sensitization programme, spring inventorization and preparation of Detailed Technical Report (DTR) in the remaining seven villages within the next few days.
