Nagaland: Students trained to develop inclusive approach towards peace

Mon, September 17 (MExN): A capacity building programme on ‘Do No Harm’ was conducted for the Peace Club members in Edith Douglas High School, Mon.

A press release from the Peace Channel desk stated that yhe main objective of the programme was to develop an inclusive approach towards peace, to develop sensitivity towards other’s sentiments, to derive long-lasting and amicable solutions and to identify common values and interests which connect and unite people.

Nyeamying Konyak, Peace Channel, District Coordinator of Mon was the resource person. She began the session by defining the origin of the term, ‘do no harm’ which was originated with the Latin phrase premium non nocere meaning ‘first, do no harm’. She explained that ‘Do No Harm’ is an important principle of conflict sensitivity. The principle is typically interpreted to mean that your actions should not cause injury or injustice to people. It is a holistic perspective that is focused on mutual benefits and not a win-lose situation. It is to remind us to think before rushing to do even good, considering also the negative consequences of our actions even if it be doing what we think is appropriate.

She also stressed that as a peace maker one should always have an inclusive approach ensuring the intervention that we make to help others must not harm or worsen the situation. This process can be executed through charity approach, voluntary approach, participatory approach and right’s based approach. Later, she encouraged all present to be more objective, analytical and more reflective in every action without being biased.

The programme concluded with a peace anthem and peace pledge led by the peace club members where they pledged to promote peace, sustain and share it to those in need in order to have a harmonious living.
