Dimapur, July 7 (MExN): The Street Vendors Association Nagaland (SVAN) and the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) Nagaland have resolved to jointly oppose extortion, harassment and forced eviction of street vendors, while working with legal authorities to safeguard vendors' rights and livelihoods across the State.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting held in Dimapur on Tuesday, where representatives of both organisations agreed to coordinate efforts to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act and the rules and schemes notified in Nagaland.

The meeting was attended by SVAN representatives led by president Kughato Zhimo and general secretary Dr Subonglemba Aier, along with office bearers, while SEWA Nagaland was represented by its president, Atoli, and other members.

The organisations deliberated on issues affecting the welfare of street vendors and stressed the need to empower vendors, particularly women and other vulnerable groups, through engagement with local authorities and Town Vending Committees in every district.

In a press release, SVAN and SEWA reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the rights, dignity and livelihoods of street vendors across Nagaland.
