Nagaland to host North East Theatre Festival 2022

The National School of Drama (NSD) Repertory Company will be organising a three-day, North East Theatre Festival 2022 from December 22 to 24 at Town Hall, Dimapur which will be the first time that they will be performing in Nagaland.

This was announced by its members during a press conference at Hotel Cedar, Dimapur on December 20.

Rajesh Singh, Chief of Repertory Company, NSD mentioned that they will be presenting three different plays, ‘Khoob Ladi Mardani, Subhadra Ki Zubani’ (December 22) ‘Baayen’ (December 23) ‘Taj Mahal Ka Tender’ (December 24) starting from 5:30 pm daily. “Each year the NSD brings different plays to the Northeast region and we have already performed in Assam, Manipur and Sikkim in the past so this is meant to spread the culture of theatrical plays to a wider audience,” he said. All the three plays will be performed in Hindi so it is also about language awareness as well, he added.

A total of 25 actors and 15-17 technical support assistants will be a part of the three-day play. Entry is free for the public however it was noted that children below 8 years will not be allowed as per their guidelines.  

V Uto Chishi, local coordinator for Dimapur and an aluminous of NSD meanwhile requested the public to come and witness the play as it is a learning experience. He also urged the state government to set up a modern auditorium for the benefit of the people.  

‘Khoob Ladi Mardani, Subhadra Ki Zubani’ is a play about the story of Indian freedom fighter, Subhadra Kumari Chauhan and her contribution during the freedom struggle. ‘Baayen’ is a story by Mahashweta Devi which seeks to create awareness about the core experiences of her writing on socio-economic disparities and the different shades on human life. 

‘Taj Mahal Ka Tender’ is a play written by Ajay Shukla on the story of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and the building of the Taj Mahal. All the three plays capture elements of traditional folk, satire, comedy and women empowerment. 
The entire event is being funded by the Central government under the Ministry of Culture. Bangalore, Banaras (Varanasi) and Gangtok
