Nagaland: ‘We should not compromise our values and integrity for the sake of tourism’

Even while tourism has become a ‘global phenomenon’, Akuno S Meyase, IAS, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, P&AR on Saturday underscored that “we should not compromise our values and integrity just for the sake of tourism.” She was addressing the 19th Dzülekemia Teisozha (Dzüleke Village Day) at Dzüleke Village Council Hall on January 25 wherein she advocated ‘sustainable tourism’ in Dzüleke that is naturally blessed with scenic beauty and resources.

Reiterating that God has given rich natural resources to the people of Dzüleke, she also underlined that “conservation for future generations must be our top priority.” In this regard, she stressed on the importance of sustainable tourism that can further enhance the village economy as well as play a significant role in conservation for the future generation.

On the other hand, she emphasized that our culture and tradition must be passed down and despite the boom in tourism, she urged that they must maintain authenticity even in their food recipes. Emphasizing on preserving the originality of the place in all other aspects, she impressed upon that the environment of the village should not be disturbed in the name of tourism.

She further urged upon the gathering to take ownership of the public assets in the village whether it is health care centres, water resources, infrastructure or schools and to care for these assets as their own. This, she said will further boost tourism.

Delivering his greetings, Vitsiepielie Sophi, Chairman of Dzüleke Village Council stated happiness to see the people of village coming together on Dzülekemia Teisozha although they are all living in different places. “Wherever you have settled, you have come because of your love for Dzüleke”, he noted.

Mention may be made here that Dzüleke citizens living in different places like Dimapur, Chümoukedima, Peducha, Kohima, Jotsoma, and  Khonoma were part of the Dzülekemia Teisozha.

Highlights of the event included prayer by Letso, Pastor, Baptist Church, Dzüleke, Thekhwe I (folk song) by Thenupfüko (womenfolk) led by Shürhovino, Tsali II (special number) by Dzüleke Youth Organisation led by Megotsolie and vote of thanks by Depialie Meyase while Meto Khate chaired the programme.
