The passing of the Nagaland Women Commission Bill 2006 in the just concluded Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) session, has received a needful response from different sections of society.
Maintaining that the passing of the Bill has fulfilled the long-felt desire of Naga women, Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) President Khesheli acknowledged the state government for passing the same in the State Assembly.
Talking to The Morung Express, she stressed on the need to have adequate women-representation in the Commission so as to serve well its purpose.
She also wanted that the appointment of the members into the Commission be properly scrutinized and also to appoint those who have good knowledge about women-related issues and happenings at grass-root level.
P Daisy Mezhur felt that every Naga women should be happy that the state government has passed the Bill.
Mezhur, who is the Secretary of Nagaland State Social Welfare Board pointed out that Naga women have been pursuing the matter for the past few years and now the Nagaland government has generously taken due consideration on the needs of women.
“This is a big achievement for all Naga women”, she said. She opined that the government needs to look into proper account needful modalities in appointing the right woman to head the Commission. She hoped that the Commission would address issues relating to legal, social and other relevant matters. She also opined that it is not the Commission alone to work but it requires concerted effort at various levels to bring about effective and congenial atmosphere.
“I am very positive that it will bear fruit,” she affirmed when asked about her expectation from the Commission.
