‘Lifeless statue’ instead of education; intent to ‘Burmanize’
Khamti, July 15 (MExN): The Eastern Naga Students' Association (ENSA) has supported the Naga Civil Societies and Organisations (CSOs) of Myanmar in opposing the plan to erect Gen. Aung San’s statue in Khamti.
“Nagas are not against the late leader of Myanmar and his legacy but instead of bringing and erecting lifeless statue in Naga ancestral inhabited region, we long and pray for better educational institutions, good transportation systems and facilities and development in Naga region. Now or later, Nagas do not accept and will never allow the lifeless statue to erect not only in Khamti but anywhere in Naga inhabited areas,” stated a press statement received today from ENSA President, Reego Shonshei, and General Secretary, Jüvsangthong S. Makury.
The students’ association maintained that elected Naga representatives of Myanmar should approach the Union Government of Myanmar to “bring favorable changes rather than funding and donating towards lifeless statue project.”
“The intending inaugural function which is scheduled to be held on July 21, 2018, at Khamti should be cancelled as per the desire of Nagas,” they maintained.
Further, “If the authority concerned do not halt and work out according to Nagas' directives on this issue, the elected members of Naga Self-Administered Zone government will be held fully responsible towards any eventualities.”
Asking every concerned Naga to raise their voices, the ENSA stated that the Union Government of Myanmar’s sole intent is to “snatch away Naga inhabited land” and “Burmanize,” a project that should be resisted.
