Naginimora orgs refute report by Assam daily on border incident

MON, SEPTEMBER 20 (MExN): The Naginimora unit of the Konyak Union and the Naganimora Students Union (NSU) have raised objection to a news report appearing in one Assam daily about a recent border incident. The two organisations, in a press rejoinder, held the report, ‘Armed miscreants attack Assam police patrol team along Assam-Nagaland border,’ which appeared on September 16, as apparently a mixed up with another incident.   Stating that no “unidentified armed miscreants” attacked Assam Police patrol team at Naginimora on September 15 as alleged, the press statement said that contrary to what was reported by the paper, the incident actually happened around 10:00 pm on September 14 at the Naginimora-Bihubor border.   It related to an incident on September 14 when three officials of the NSU, the statement said, were harassed by Assam Police personnel. It added that the NSU officials were in a car and on their way to Bihubor when “two Assam Police personnel blocked the road at the border area… without any reason.”   Alleging the Assam Police personnel were “drunk” and not in uniform, the statement said that the personnel accused the NSU officials of being NSCN (K) cadres when they requested to let them pass. Not long after, more police personnel arrived at the scene and assaulted the three and were taken to the Bihubor Police Station.   The matter was finally resolved after “elders from Naginimora” intervened. It also alleged that police personnel tried to open fire “but fortunately the rifle misfired.”   The news report stating the incident as occurring on the night of September 15, said some 8-9 “armed miscreants” attacked a police patrol team of the Bihubar PS and at gunpoint demanded the release of a person from Nagaland, who was under custody of the Bihubar PS. hots were allegedly fired, the lock up broken open, the armed men freeing the individual in custody and escaping. Two constables of the Police Station were also reported as injured in the incident, according to the news report.
