National Girl Child Day observed across Nagaland

Students of St Peter School, Toulazouma who participated in the observation of the National Girl Child Day on January 24.

Dimapur, January 24 (MExN): The National Girl Child Day was observed throughout the state of Nagaland on January 24.


The CHILDLINE Team in Dimapur organized the observation of the day at St Peter School, Toulazouma. The students were reminded to remove different types of social stigmas, discrimination and exploitation that girls face in their day today life, regardless of any age group. The team emphasized on topics like ‘My Body Safety Rules - Good Touch and Bad Touch,’ and ‘Menstrual Hygiene Management.’


The team also demonstrated on the use of sanitary pads and distributed them to the students.


Mon: Vice President of the KNSK, Bonnie said that empowerment of girls should begin at home. “If girls and women are in the decision making then big changes will be definitely come,” she added.


During the occasion, the district administration felicitated the top three girl students who scored highest marks in HSLC 2018 result under Mon district. The awardees were N Zamyum K of St John Higher Secondary School, Mon; Rasna Begam H of Christ King High School, Mon; and Ngapkai L. Tahkaishu of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Mon.


DC Thavaseelan K and SP Mon, Imnasenla gave away the certificates and cash prizes to the awardees.


Wokha: Wokha celebrated the day at the Town Hall, with Miss Wokha & 1st Runners up of Miss Nagaland, Grace W Ezung speaking against discriminatory practices against the girl child. To have a progressive society, Grace opined that people need to extend support and create more opportunities to the girl child.


ADC Wokha, Mhathung Tsanglao meanwhile informed that the district has been recognized as one of the best districts in the country with regard to implementation of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao project. He also said that the district has launched various advocacy and skill development projects with assistance of all stakeholders. Within two and a half months, the district conducted more than eighty workshops last year.


Peren: ADC Jalukie, Dr Tinojongshi Chang urged people to uphold the spirit of equality in educating both boys and girls. Dr Rev Fr Francis, Principal of St Xavier College also spoke on the occasion and called upon the participants to change their mindset for speedy transformation of society.


Social welfare Department officials from Peren, Jalukie, Tening, Nsong and Ahthibung along with Anganwadi workers from Jalukie attended the function.


Tuensang: The day was celebrated in Tuensang, with Deputy Commissioner L Jamithung Lotha calling for efforts to improve the boy to girl sex ration and improving the health conditions of the girl child.


Sr. Gynecologist of Tuensang District Hospital, Dr Yanranthung informed gave statistics on decreasing sex ratio of girls between zero to six years of age. “As far as Nagas are concerned we are liberal, but being in a patriarchal society there may exist some discrimination against the female child which should be checked,” he stated.


47 girl child participants were also involved in a ‘baby show competition,’ which was held during the event.
