NBA decries appointment of Advocate General from outside

DIMAPUR, APRIL 26 (MExN): The Nagaland Bar Association (NBA) has expressed strong disapproval over the government’s continued practice of appointing the Advocate General of the state from outside Nagaland. This issue was highlighted during the NBA’s Annual General Meeting held on April 25 at the Dimapur Bar Association Conference Hall.

In a resolution passed at the meeting, the NBA decided to publicly express its dissatisfaction with the continued appointment of the Advocate General from outside Nagaland. It noted that since the state's inception in 1963, no Advocate General has been appointed from the legal community within Nagaland, a point the NBA views as a long-standing concern.
The NBA also resolved to continue its efforts for the establishment of a separate High Court for the state, reaffirming its commitment to legal reform. The High Court Bar Association, Kohima, has been tasked with leading the charge for this long-standing demand.

Along with this, the meeting expressed concerns over legal professionals serving in government positions, following recent criticisms of such dual roles. The Bar resolved that any advocate serving in government roles must either cease practicing or resign from their government position. Strict action will be taken against any violations of the Advocates Act regarding eligibility to practice law.

Additionally, the NBA re-elected its office bearers for another term. A. Zhimomi was re-elected as the President, with Zuchumpeni Ngullie as Vice President, Seyielhouto Keyho as Secretary, Akum Pongen as Joint Secretary, and Sentimenla as Treasurer. President Zhimomi thanked the Bar for its continued trust and confidence.
