Dimapur, September 29 (MExN): The Vigilance Committee of the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has appealed to the Nagaland Power & Electrical Department to retain the existing electricity tariff for Dimapur, citing the district’s hot and humid climatic conditions and the resulting dependence on electrical appliances.
In a representation addressed to the Chief Engineer (Distribution & Revenue), the committee stated that certain electrical appliances have become a "basic need for survival for all sections of people" in the district. The committee said the new electricity tariff in Nagaland is comparatively higher than rates in other states. It cited Delhi, where consumption from 0-200 kWh is charged at Rs 3 per kWh and 201-400 kWh at Rs 4.50 per kWh.
It also pointed to neighbouring Assam, where 0-120 kWh is charged at Rs 4.25 per kWh and 121-240 kWh at Rs 6.50 per kWh. In comparison, the committee stated that Nagaland’s tariff is Rs 5.70 per kWh for 0-30 kWh, Rs 6 per kWh for 31-100 kWh and Rs 7.33 per kWh for 101-250 kWh.
"Being a welfare state the new electrical tariff rate of Nagaland is comparatively higher than other states," the committee stated. The Vigilance Committee urged the department to consider its appeal with "utmost urgency" and honour its petition on behalf of the public of Dimapur.
