The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) Tuensang Region marked the 74th birthday of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio with a commemoration thanksgiving programme held at the District Hospital, Tuensang, on November 11.

The event was led by W B Mongko, Secretary of the NDPP Students’ Committee, Tuensang Region, with an invocation prayer by N Naong Chang, President of the Tuensang Region Women Organisation.

Dr Puse Liegise, Medical Superintendent of the District Hospital welcomed attendees, expressing gratitude for selecting the hospital as the venue to honor Rio’s birthday and for sharing their goodwill with each patient by offering a prayer and leaving gifts.

H Wongto Chang, Region President of the NDPP, praised Rio’s commitment and influence on Nagaland’s development, calling him a “dynamic leader” and “visionary.” Chang shared a brief biography of Rio, who was born on November 11, 1950, in Tuophema Village, Kohima District, and attended Baptist English School in Kohima before completing his education at Sainik School Purulia, St Joseph’s College Darjeeling, and Kohima Arts College.

Rio’s political career spans more than 40 years. In 1989, he was first elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly as a Congress candidate and later held key positions, including Minister of Sports, School Education, and Home Minister, before becoming Chief Minister in 2003. With a record five terms, he is the longest-serving Chief Minister in Nagaland’s history. Known for his contributions to infrastructure, education, and healthcare, Rio played a key role in establishing India’s first Music Task Force, promoting the region’s rich musical heritage. In 2007, he received the Mother Teresa Millennium Award for political contributions and leadership.

“Chief Minister Rio has remained committed to serving the Naga people, addressing community needs, and acting with compassion and empathy,” said Chang. “We wish him strength, wisdom, and long life on this special day and look forward to his continued contributions.”
