Kohima, August 19 (MExN): The Nagaland Education Association (NEA) has completed its series of special lecture on constructivism as an approach to constructive education in Nagaland. The last lecture was held on August 18 at Sazolie College of Teacher Education, Jotsoma.
NEA launched the special lecture in 2017 and the same was conducted for Teacher Educators and B.Ed students of Modern Institute of Teacher Education, Kohima, URA College of Teacher Education, Kohima, and Sazolie College of Teacher Education, Kohima. Several hundreds of teacher educators and teacher trainees participated in the programme conducted in different colleges.
“The idea of constructivism has greatly influenced the modern education system specially the Indian Education system,” a press note stated. It added that the National Curriculum Framework 2005 has defined the child as the natural constructor of knowledge. It emphasised that modern teachers have lost faith in the child and that is the reason why teachers teach everything without giving opportunities for children to work to discover themselves.
The release noted that National Curriculum for School Education 2000 has recognised the child as the Constructor of Knowledge, while the Draft National Policy on Education 2016 recognising the child as the expert learner, emphasised that the School Education must promote Critical Thinking, Concentration, Reasoning rather than a mere memorization of facts and figures.
Dr. Zavise Rume, President, Nagaland Education Association in the press release stated that through the special lectures, the Association promoted various methods and skills of teaching. “Children should be enabled to ask as many questions as they want to ask. This is possible if teachers can arouse the interest in the child to do so. Use quiz as a method of teaching. Let child quiz,” he added.
Teachers were encouraged to use continuous and comprehensive evaluation as a culture of teaching. Conduct more literary programs through which we allow children to construct their own views and opinions like debating, extempore speech, essay writing, role play, drama, painting, drawing, music, dance, silent meditation, interaction, counseling, they were told.
The special lecture also emphasised the importance of team teaching, collaboration in teaching and learning, group work and thematic approach to teaching.
