Need for accessible care and facilities for PWDs stressed

International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed in Dimapur

Along with the rest of the State, International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed at Chapel Hall, District Hospital Dimapur on December 2. Organised by the District Level Committee for Persons with Disabilities in collaboration with Exodus Disabled People’s Organisation, Dimapur and support from Prodigals’ Home, the event saw in attendance about 87 PWDs from across Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland. 

Under this year’s theme ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities,’ the speakers of the programme emphasised on the need to provide accessible care and facilities for them in all sphere of life provided under the law. 

As special guest, Dimapur Deputy Commissioner (DC), Dr Tinojongshi Chang noted that while exceptional changes have been seen in the state with regard to improvement in care and facilities for PWDs, there were still many others who have not gotten the right facilities especially in rural villages. 

He reminded the gathering that disabled people were no less different than other people as they were capable of doing great things in life in spite of their condition. Based on his experiences and interactions as DC of other districts, he reported to have seen many PWDs doing well especially in the realm of business. 

In addition, he reported that the government is and will continue to make all out efforts to organise various events for the benefit of PWDs, including in sports, music and arts. 

The election commission had also stressed on the need to include each and every PWD in the voter roll and enable them to exercise their franchise, he said.

“We at the district administration will continue to help and support you and fulfill your needs,” he told the attendees. 

Meanwhile, Director of Prodigals’ Home, K Ela, viewed that although there were still innumerable challenges to overcome, several achievements and breakthroughs and success have been made as well. Looking back in the year 2007, it was the beginning of this initiative, to provide awareness and training to parents and caregivers of children with disabilities. 

Today, many have come with their children to this event which shows their concern for their well-being, she said.  She further encouraged them to provide the necessary the love and support as it was the most crucial aspect in their life. 

“The CM had also announced a sanction of Rs 1 crore to the office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disability,” she told them. This is to ensure their wellbeing and development in all aspects so that they can contribute to the progress of the nation, she added. 

Everyone has the responsibility to know about the rights provided by the Constitution for PWDs, she noted. 

During the programme, songs and dance performances were presented by Lino K Awomi, Asenla, Moatula and Chingdang & friends.
