Maligaon, April 13 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has developed a new ‘Bihutoli’, a cultural ground for celebrating Bihu and other important events, at Maligaon, and named it “Zubeen Garg Railway Bihutoli” in honour of noted Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

The naming reflects the deep cultural connect and admiration for the artist across Assam, officials said.

The Bihutoli has been equipped with modern facilities, including a permanent stage area, dining hall, toilet complex, community space, boundary wall and an all-weather ground.

The venue is set to host the annual Rongali Bihu celebrations organised by Pandu Bihu Sanmilani, Maligaon, from April 14 to 17.

A pre-Bihu opening event was held recently at the newly developed ground, which was attended by NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava amid traditional festivities. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from railway officials, local residents and cultural enthusiasts.

Adding to the occasion, Palmee Borthakur, sister of Zubeen Garg, was also present and expressed gratitude on behalf of the family for the honour conferred on the artist.

The initiative underscores NFR’s commitment to promoting regional culture and recognising icons who have made significant contributions to society. Officials said the naming of the Bihutoli symbolises Zubeen Garg’s enduring legacy, particularly during the vibrant festival of Bihu, which holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Assam.
