MALIGAON, AUGUST 22 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has undertaken measures to enhance passenger safety by modernizing its rolling stock and integrating advanced fire detection systems across its fleet.
As part of Indian Railways' modernization initiative, NFR is replacing conventional ICF coaches with state-of-the-art Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, which are equipped with advanced safety features including Fire and Smoke Detection System (FSDS), Fire Detection and Suppression System (FDSS), and Aerosol-based Fire Detection Systems.
To date, 1223 LHB AC coaches have been fitted with FSDS, while 148 power cars and 79 pantry cars are equipped with FDSS. Additionally, 956 AC coaches have been provided with Aerosol-based Fire Detection Systems. These systems continuously monitor critical areas within coaches to detect potential fire incidents and raise immediate alarms for prompt intervention.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer, NFR in a press release emphasized that these measures aim to prevent panic, minimize injuries, and reduce loss of life and property, thereby ensuring minimal disruption to train services. The installation of fire protection systems in all power cars, pantry cars, and AC coaches is being carried out in a phased manner.
NFR also conducts regular safety drives, periodic safety audits, and infrastructure inspections to identify and address vulnerabilities in asset maintenance and operational procedures. These efforts are part of the railway's ongoing commitment to ensuring the highest levels of safety and comfort for passengers across its network.
