Maligaon, March 31 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reported significant progress in connectivity, modernisation and passenger services across the North-East during the financial year 2025–26, according to an official update.
During the period, the NFR introduced 20 pairs of new train services, including premium, semi-premium and conventional trains, strengthening rail connectivity within the region as well as with other parts of the country.
In a boost to operational efficiency, the speeds of 35 trains were increased, resulting in a cumulative saving of 675 minutes in travel time, with an average reduction of about 19 minutes per train, informed the NFR in a press release.
The zone also achieved 100% electrification, contributing to Indian Railways’ focus on sustainable and energy-efficient operations, while improving line capacity and train handling, it said.
The release highlighted the commissioning of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line as a major milestone for Mizoram.
Passenger services on the route have reportedly received strong response, with several trains recording over 100% occupancy. Freight operations have also expanded, including the transportation of cement, stone chips and automobiles.
Among other developments, the NFR recorded the first inward automobile rake at Sairang, initiation of freight operations at Molvom in Nagaland, and the first full rake loading at Mendipathar in Meghalaya, enhancing trade and market access in the region.
On infrastructure, the release noted the introduction of new-generation train services, including the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Howrah and Guwahati, along with Amrit Bharat and LHB-equipped trains. The commissioning of the Murkongselek–Sille section is expected to further improve connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh.
Station redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme has also progressed, with Haibargaon Railway Station in Assam developed as a model station, while Kamakhyaguri Railway Station in West Bengal has been upgraded with improved passenger amenities.
The release further stated that NFR has upgraded railway hospitals with modern facilities and enhanced railway schools with improved infrastructure and digital learning environments as part of its efforts to strengthen employee welfare.
Overall, the initiatives reflect NFR’s continued focus on improving passenger services and supporting regional growth across the Northeast, the release added.
