NFR intensifies push toward 100% electrification; key sections inspected

MALIGAON, JUNE 20 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is steadily advancing toward its goal of 100% electrification, with key inspections of newly electrified sections conducted this month by the Principal Chief Electrical Engineer (PCEE), Sandeep Kumar.

As part of efforts to enhance sustainable and efficient rail operations, the inspections are statutory prerequisites for introducing commercial train services using 25 kV AC electric traction. These measures are aimed at ensuring safety and operational readiness across the network.

On June 9, the PCEE inspected the 46 track kilometre Chaparmukh–Hojai 2nd line section under the Lumding Division. This was followed by the inspection of the Azara–Dudhnoi section under Rangiya Division on June 10, covering 99.32 TKM and 20.44 route kilometres. The third inspection was held on June 16 across the Duliajan–Tinsukia and Tinsukia–Dibrugarh sections in the Tinsukia Division—critical corridors for Upper Assam’s regional connectivity.

These sections are expected to significantly improve operational efficiency, capacity, and reliability in the zone. NFR achieved a record 1,141 route kilometres of electrification in FY 2024–25. For FY 2025–26, the zone has targeted electrification of approximately 640 RKM. The recent inspections represent another step toward reducing diesel traction dependence, cutting carbon emissions, and modernizing railway infrastructure in the Northeast.

The commissioning of these sections is also expected to enhance train speeds, reduce travel time, and offer more eco-friendly rail services to the region.
