Maligaon, March 17 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reported steady progress on the Lumding–Furkating Double Line Project, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening rail connectivity in the North-East.

Spanning approximately 140 kilometres, the project was sanctioned during 2024–25 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,123.70 crore.

It is being implemented in multiple phases, with a targeted completion timeline of January 2028, an official release informed.

According to the NFR, phased commissioning is expected to begin from May 2026, covering sections such as Naojan–Sarupathar, Dhansiri–Rangapahar, and parts linked to Dimapur connectivity.

The project involves the construction of 19 major bridges, 161 minor bridges, and the development of 20 stations. Work is currently underway across different stretches.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 13 laid the foundation stone for the Furkating–New Tinsukia Doubling Project. The 194-kilometre project, estimated at around Rs 3,634 crore, is intended to enhance rail capacity and improve operational efficiency across Upper Assam and adjoining areas.

An important route under the NFR, the section caters to both passenger and freight movement. The doubling of this section is expected to ease congestion on the existing line and facilitate smoother and more reliable train operations, the release added.
