NFR takes steps to deter agitations on railway tracks

Maligaon, May 7 (MExN): In a bid to curb disruptions caused by ‘Rail Roko’ (stop the trains) agitations, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has implemented a new strategy that combines legal enforcement with financial accountability, an official release informed.

This move marks a departure from traditional responses, with NFR now filing civil compensation suits to recover monetary losses from those responsible for obstructing train services, it said.

It being complemented by criminal prosecution under the Railways Act, handled by the Railway Protection Force (RPF), ensuring strict legal consequences for such disruptions, added the release issued by the CPRO NFR.

So far, two civil suits have been filed in the civil courts of Alipurduar and Malda, seeking compensation of Rs. 5.94 crore for damages resulting from prolonged rail blockades.

According to the NFR, the initiative has already had a deterrent effect, with four planned Rail Roko programmes being withdrawn in response.

The coordinated effort, led by Senior Divisional Operations Managers (Sr.DOMs), supported by the RPF and the General Manager’s Law Office of NFR, is being seen as a model of administrative resolve and legal innovation, it maintained.

NFR, in alignment with Indian Railways (IR), remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted train operations while maintaining safety, punctuality, and public convenience, it added.
