Maligaon, April 25 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has undertaken a series of infrastructure and safety upgrades across its divisions in March 2026 to enhance the safety and reliability of train operations.
In a statement, the NFR said it continues to focus on adopting modern and technically advanced systems, along with continuous monitoring and upgradation of infrastructure, to ensure safe and efficient train movement across the zone.
As part of the initiatives, thick web switch point machines with clamp-type locking were installed at five stations across Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya and Lumding divisions.
System Integrity Testing was carried out at seven stations in Katihar, Alipurduar and Tinsukia divisions. Additionally, an extensive drive covering 32 level crossing gates was completed across all divisions to ensure system reliability. Several level crossing gates in Lumding and Rangiya divisions were also interlocked to enhance operational safety.
To further strengthen signalling infrastructure, 10 sliding booms were commissioned at level crossing gates in Katihar, Lumding and Rangiya divisions.
In Tinsukia division, Automatic Fire Detection and Alarm Systems were commissioned at two stations, including the upgradation to advanced aspiration-type systems at two locations. Electric lifting barriers were also installed at two level crossing gates, replacing older mechanical systems to improve safety at rail-road intersections.
The railway also undertook signalling cable meggering at 11 stations and 12 level crossing gates to ensure proper insulation and reliability.
A total of 1,258 signalling batteries of various capacities were replaced across all divisions to improve the reliability of safety equipment. Additionally, 246 glued joints and 92 integrated type signal LEDs were replaced across the zone.
Improved earthing arrangements were also provided at Gauripur station in Alipurduar division to enhance system safety and stability.
According to the NFR, these infrastructural upgrades are crucial for ensuring safe train operations, improving reliability and enhancing overall operational capacity. It reiterated its commitment to providing a safer, more efficient and punctual travel experience through continuous strengthening of infrastructure.
