DIMAPUR, MAY 17 (MExN): The Nagaland Gaon Bura Federation (NGBF) has reiterated its strong objection to any move aimed at altering the nomenclature or roles of Gaon Buras (GBs) in both urban and rural areas.
In a statement issued by its media cell, the Federation said the institution of Gaon Buras, one of the oldest traditional systems in Nagaland dating back to the 18th century, is deeply rooted in Naga customary law, traditions and practices, and continues to be valid irrespective of location.
The NGBF noted that under the customary system, GBs and village elders have historically been vested with administrative and judicial powers, playing a vital role in local governance. This system, it said. remains valid and recognized regardless of whether Nagas reside in rural villages or urban settlements.
The Federation cautioned that any alteration to the institution — including changes to its nomenclature or functional role — could have far-reaching consequences and may eventually lead to its marginalization or dismantling.
With increasing urbanisation in the state, the NGBF expressed concern that the GB institution faces the risk of erasure if safeguards are not put in place.
It urged the Government of Nagaland to reconsider and revoke the order issued via the Commissioner of Nagaland’s notification No. CNR-5/GBS-MISC/2023/235, dated December 6, 2023, which put in abeyance proposals for fresh appointments or replacements of GBs.
The Federation reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of the Gaon Bura institution and called on the government to respect and uphold the customary governance of the Naga people.
