2nd Nagaland Honey Bee Day concludes

In coinciding with Hornbill festival, the 2nd Nagaland Honey Bee Day took place here today at The Heritage with the theme “Save Bee Save Life” under the aegis of Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM) with support from North East Council (NEC).


Nagaland’s Governor RN Ravi also visited the stalls and interacted with the bee farmers and officials. Gracing the occasion, Nagaland’s Chief Secretary Temjen Toy complimented the pioneer of NHBM for successful beekeeping activities.


Every household in Nagaland is potential bee keeper, he said. He urged the NHBM to take extra effort for promotion of bee keeping in Nagaland. Further, he urged NHBM to continue on mission for more production of honey and to make Nagaland a Honey destination.


Presently, the honey bee production in Nagaland stands around 430 MT.


S Tainiu Khiam, Joint secretary APC Cell and SPD FOCUS IFAD in her short speech expressed her gratitude to the State Government for declaring 5th December as the Nagaland Honey Bee Day.


NBHM chairman Ntsemo Ngullie said that the NBHM has chosen the theme “Save Bee Save Life” to send out a strong message that the survival of honey bee depends on various factors and it is our duty to ensure their continued survival by finding sustainable solutions to factors that threaten the survival.


“Let us all pledge to save a bee today for our own survival tomorrow,” he said.


Nagaland is truly blessed with an abundance of natural resources. The diversity of honey bee resources is what makes it possible, to celebrate this day, he said. He said the occasion provide platform to forge ahead with state a beekeeping hub and honey destination.


Earlier, the Chief Secretary gave away the State Level and District level award for Best Beekeeper and state level award for Best Village Beekeeping committee.


The recipients of the District level award for best beekeepers includes; Shehuto Zhimomi from Pherima village, Dimapur District, Kiusangthong from New Vongti, Kiphire District, Kevizelie Pienyu from Nerhema Village, Kohima District, Yampa from Yangching village, Longleng District, Nungsangwati Kichu from Chungtia village, Mokokchung District, K P Sangte from Monyakshu village, Mon District, Juhie from Punglwa Village, Peren District, Thupuruyo from Khusomi village from Phek District, Hekiamong Yimchunger from Yakor village, Tuensang District, Wopon Kikon from Longsa village, Wokha District and Hetoyi Yeptho from Phuye new village of Zunheboto District.


State level award was awarded to Chirayi of Khutsami village from Phek District and State level award for best village Bee Keeping Committee was awarded to Yakor Village from Tuensang District.


Later, a short documentary film on rearing of stingless bees in Nagaland, entitled “My Bees are Stingless” was screened on the occasion.
