An official of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) based in Mokokchung, Nagaland has been booked by the Mokokchung Police on corruption charges.

The officer, identified as BD Jangade and designated as General Manager (P) of Project Monitoring Units (PMUs), Mokokchung on NHIDCL’s website, was booked based on an FIR received at Mokokchung Police Station-I from the Deputy Commissioner to the effect that a video of Jangade “is currently in circulation on social media where he is seen demanding a cut of 1% as his share in every contract work executed by contractors.”

The complainant further requested to initiate criminal proceedings against the accused, informed a press note from the Superintendent of Police, Mokokchung on June 4.

Jangade was subsequently arrested on June 2 from the NHIDCL Office in Mokokchung and booked under relevant section of India Penal Code (IPC) read with prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act 2018, it said.

During the preliminary interrogation it was established that Jangade was in-charge of Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Wokha, Longleng, Mon and a part of Kohima district since January 1, 2019 for execution of road construction in the state, it added.

Meanwhile, the NHIDCL in an order issued on June 2 has reportedly ordered repatriation of Jangade to his parent body – Border Roads Organisation, with ‘immediate effect,’ in view of his arrest by the Nagaland Police.

The Morung Express tried contacting the NHIDCL Regional Office in Kohima via calls and text messages on June 2 regarding the issue but has received no response so far.

It was only on June 3 that a senior NHIDCL official from New Delhi responded. S Ramakrishnan, Deputy General Manager (HR/Admn), NHIDCL Corporate Office, New Delhi, replied, “One officer who was on deputation has been repatriated to his organization. This is in addition to a FIR lodged with the local police authority.”

The Mokokchung Police, meanwhile, informed that investigation is still on regarding the issue, including the origination of the viral video.
