KOHIMA, OCTOBER 3 (MExN): The Supreme Court of India has granted a stay on the orders of the Guahati High Court (GHC) in which the Court had directed to conduct fresh Census enumeration of Longsa Village of Mokokchung District, and not to carry out any changes in the Electoral rolls of Longsa village pending such enumeration. This was informed through a statement by the Chief Election Officer of Nagaland, J. Alam.
Following the filing of a writ petition in June this year by Longsa village in the Kohima Bench of the GHC against the reduction of their population in the provisional census 2011, as well as numbers in the voters in the electoral rolls in the last summary revision, the Bench had ordered fresh census to be conducted in the village. The Census and Election departments filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against these orders.
According to them, the GHC order would’ve interfered with the directions of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls in the State from October 1. The Special Leave Petition was filed in the Supreme Court on the directions of the ECI.
The Supreme Court’s bench consisted of Justice Swatankar Kumar and Justice Sudhanu Jyoti heard the case on October 1 and ruled in favour of the Election Department, which will be able to carry out the Special Summary Revision in all polling stations including in Longsa village w.e.f. October 1.
