The North East NSS Youth Festival 2016 which began on March 1 held its inaugural function on March 2 with Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar, IAS as the chief guest. The Festival which is being held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima will continue till March 5 with the participation of NSS volunteers from the 8 states in the North East.
While lauding the NSS volunteers for their quality of discipline, leadership, Pankaj Kumar also mentioned that the festival has a very good representation from all the North East States. Reminding the participants that the festival is a big occasion, Kumar urged the participants to take full advantage of the opportunity and “try to interact with each other, be curious, do not hesitate to ask questions and try to understand each others’ culture.”
Further delving into the complexity of India with its diverse cultures, Kumar also stated that the North East region and Nagaland itself is comprised of various tribes. When living together, two important objectives should be kept in mind, stated Kumar. The consciousness of one’s identity and the consciousness of living together were the two objectives which Kumar viewed as being crucial where each individual or community need to cooperate with each other for the greater good of the society. The Chief Secretary hoped that the participants will bear these objectives in mind while celebrating the festival.
Sunil Kumar Basumatary, Regional Director, NSS, NE region Guwahati who delivered the keynote address stated that the NE NSS is excelling in the country and is regarded as one of the most disciplined. Sharing the objectives and various programs of NSS, Basumatary mentioned that one of the core objectives is to develop the personality of the youth through community services, discipline as the culture of NSS and to create leaders different from the rest.
The ongoing Festival will witness academic sessions, field visits, and cultural programmes.
A prayer was invoked by Pete Z. Krose, Vice Principal, Kohima Bible College. The welcome address was delivered by C. Theyo, NSS officer. The NSS theme song was performed by Don Bosco College, Kohima while special numbers was presented by Khrüküdülü Swuro and Christina Lalruatpuii.
