Kohima | September 21
The Government High School (GHS) PWD Colony Kohima commemorated its 50 years anniversary on September 21 with Dr. Neikesalie Nicky Kire, Minister for Roads and Bridges as the chief guest. The theme for the golden jubilee was ‘Now and Beyond’.
The school which was established on August 11, 1967 began with three teachers and ten students (Class A-2). Considering the need for a school at PWD colony, the Department of School Education set up the school where the PWD department allotted a type fourth of their government quarter to start the school.
The school upgraded to a Middle School in 2003. Further, on October 28, 2010, the school was further upgraded to High school level. At present, the school is run by an Assistant Headmaster with 28 teachers, 2 carpentry instructors, 1 knitting instructor, one physical health instructor, one drawing teacher, and five non-teaching staff.
“This celebration is definitely something for you to remember. It is not just a time to celebrate and have feast but to recollect about the past, think of the future and learning to forgive one another,” said Dr. Nicky Kire. Instructing the teachers to understand each child according to his/her abilities, Kire pointed out that each child have their own way of doing things, seeing things, their own interests, and distinct skills. “Teachers should understand that each child is different, that the children are not the same. Treat them as your own child so that we take more care of them. Mould them according to their gifts and skills; nurture them according to their talent,” stated Kire.
The need for teachers to prepare their subjects well while imparting knowledge to the children was also emphasized and parents were also urged not to put the entire responsibility of education to the teachers. “To the child, the teacher is always right and not the parents.” said Kire.
While academics is important, Kire also stressed on the need to mould the students in other fields and skills, and most importantly impart cultural and traditional knowledge, folk songs and dances to the students.
To the students, the Chief Guest urged them to pay attention to their education, maintain cleanliness but most importantly come to school with a clear mind so that “you can choose what you want to be tomorrow. You will be tomorrow what you decide today.” Further reflecting on the theme ‘Now and beyond’, Dr Kire encouraged the students, “We are in the now. Now you are a student but tomorrow is what you will make yourself to be. When the beyond comes you maybe somebody, don’t forget your payback time. You have a duty to give back to society.”
With dedication, determination and discipline, Dr. Kire hoped that the students will be able to impact even a little change in each of their communities. However reminding the students the three Ts that is ‘Things takes time’ Dr Kire concluded, “It is your hard work that will take you somewhere.”
