LIFE, a non-governmental organization, in collaboration with the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) and Dimapur Municipal Council has embarked on a mission to utilize plastic waste in construction of roads.

Addressing media persons on Friday, DMC Administrator, Moa Sangtam said that non-biodegradable plastic could be used to construct roads and added that it would enhance the durability of the road.

Moa said that they were experimenting for the first time in the DMC premises with the help of Nagaland Pollution Control Board. He said once it was successful, huge chunks of plastic waste would be used for construction of roads in different colonies.

He said that DMC also wanted to show to the people that it was possible to make use of plastic waste to construct roads.

He further said that the DMC was planning to collaborate with some colonies and would ask them to separate plastic wastes to be used for construction of roads.

An official of the NPCB said that the roads constructed by using plastics was called polymer bitumen road where 10% plastic and 90% bitumen was used.

He disclosed that the NPCB first constructed such road in its premises way back in 2009, which has not deteriorated till today. He said till today there were no potholes on the road.

He said plastic waste was a strong binding agent, which keeps the materials together and do not wear out in the presence of water.

Members of LIFE said that they have collaborated with DMC to make their dream of making the environment plastic free a reality.

They added that any kind of plastic can be used in constructing roads.

It may be mentioned that 1 tonne of plastic is required for constructing 1 kilometer of road, which is said to be very economical and pollution free.
