KOHIMA, MAY 10 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has acknowledged the State Government’s expression of regret over issuing a transfer and posting notification on April 13, Palm Sunday, a holy day for Christians worldwide, and has subsequently decided to call off its proposed agitation.
In a statement issued by its Communications Department on Saturday, the NPCC noted that while the Government claimed the action was unintentional, the incident reflected a "serious lack of awareness and sensitivity" toward the religious and cultural sentiments of the Naga people.
The party urged the Government to exercise caution in the future and refrain from issuing official notifications or taking administrative decisions on religiously significant days, including Sundays. “Any exercise that could potentially infringe on the religious beliefs and cultural practices of the people should be undertaken with a nuanced approach. Any deviation, even if stated to be unintentional, is unacceptable,” it stated.
The NPCC further criticised the incident as “a page out of the BJP’s playbook,” accusing it of attempting to dismantle the secular fabric of the Constitution through “a thousand paper cuts.” It cautioned the people of Nagaland to remain vigilant and ensure that the state government does not become “a vassal of this divisive modus operandi.”
The NPCC asserted that it would continue to monitor such actions closely to prevent recurrence of similar "mistakes."
