NPCC recommends nonpartisan ULB election

Dimapur, March 15 (MExN): The Indian National Congress (INC) candidates in Nagaland held a post-mortem meeting to analyze their overall performance in the recent elections and discuss the upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) election.

According to a press release from the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) Communications Department, during the meeting, the Congress party, humbled by the election verdict, has lost its moral authority to voice opinions on public interest issues. The majority's rejection of the election manifesto has silenced the party, and as such,  the INC candidates recommended that Congress should act as a constructive opposition, even though outside the House, it said.

The meeting also highlighted the need to understand “the madness of the multitude over money and power which is endangering the existence of Nagaland and its society.”

On the ULB elections, the meeting recommended ‘nonpartisan democracy election.’ It means political parties will not award tickets, and ward/constituency leaders would select/elect moral leaders to represent the wards through consensus and cooperation, it said. The decisions will be the conscience of the majority without party backing, and there will be no opposition or ruling. The INC candidates believe that this will bring clean governance at the grassroots level. The issue will be further discussed with the government, political parties, and civil societies, including the Church, it added.

The meeting also decided to recommend the elimination of the ‘Tax on land and building’ under the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001, and explore other resources to generate revenue, the release stated.

Meanwhile, the Congress party acknowledged the efforts of those who stood firm for the party despite adverse conditions. It expressed regret for the shortcomings and alleged negative roles played by some party workers. The INC candidates vowed to remain united in promoting and strengthening Congress and appealed to positive thinkers to join hands with them.
