Following the Memorandum of Reconciliation signed between the two warring NPF factions-one led by TR Zeliang and the other by Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu on December 8, 2017, a meeting of the Legislature Party of Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) was held today at the State Banquet Hall, Kohima.
This is the first time that the DAN Legislature Party is meeting since the split over leadership issue and the tussle for the NPF symbol and party ownership erupted between TR Zeliang and Dr Shürhozelie. The reconciliation agreement signed on December 8 was reportedly done only between ‘delegates’ of the two groups.
On Wednesday, a number of new developments transpired in the meeting reportedly attended by around 42 MLAs, the first one being the election of Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu as the chairman of the DAN Legislature Party. This comes as an affirmation of leadership for the veteran politician who despite being outnumbered in numbers during the NPF crisis stood unflinching and came out a winner.
In addition, four Ministers were dropped from the Council of Ministers headed by TR Zeliang. A notification to this effect was also issued by Nagaland Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar. The Ministers relieved from the Council of Ministers include Tokheho Yepthomi, School Education, Parliamentary Affairs; Y Patton, Home; Dr Nicky Kire, Roads & Bridges; and Neiba Kronu, Environment, Forest & Climate Change.
No other confirmation could be made on the names that could be filling up the vacant berths in the Council of Ministers to replace those relieved of their duties. However, sources said that induction of legislators from Dr Shürhozelie’s group which has 10 NPF and one Independent in the Council of Ministers is imminent.
After all the grimy political games tossed to and fro among the two NPF factions, the newly merged NPF party is now expected to submit the reconciliation agreement to the Election Commission of India (ECI). A two-day 19th winter session and possibly the last session of the present 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly is also scheduled to begin from Thursday, December 14 onwards.
