NPF suggests consultations over ULB election issue

Dimapur, March 18 (MExN): The Naga People's Front (NPF) has expressed concern over the ongoing tussle between the various organisations/civil societies and the present government with regard to the conduct of Urban Local Body (ULB) election in the state.

“The Party is of the view that a broad based consultation is necessary with all the stakeholders (especially on taxation on land and properties) before election is conducted,” it stated in s press communiqué on Saturday. It suggested that the ULB election which was notified by the government on March 9 should be kept on hold till a consensus is arrived at.

The NPF went on to state that it does not want the “same story of 2017 to be repeated viz. the burning down of the Government offices in Kohima, the private residents of the candidates were vandalized, some of the candidates were even excommunicated from their respective localities and most of all two precious lives was lost.” The government of the day ought to think twice before rushing to conduct the election, it added.

Meanwhile, the NPF party maintained its stand on women empowerment and reiterated reservation of women quota in the Municipal and Town Councils. However, “the new proposal which the Government of the day is pushing for reservation of Chairperson's Post for women is devoid of logic,” it said.

Further, the NPF reiterated its stand for an early solution to the Naga Political Issue and urged upon the Government of India, the NSCN (IM), and the WC,NNPGs to expedite the political talks and bring the long drawn negotiation to a logical conclusion.

“The role of the present day government as facilitator for an honourable, acceptable and inclusive solution to the protracted Naga Issue should be activated with all sincerity as assured to the electorates. Towards this endeavour, the NPF would extend all possible cooperation so long as the Government of the day play its role as an active facilitator in right earnest,” it added.
