DIMAPUR, August 2 (MExN): 32 Assam Rifles busted an illegal detention centre run by NSCN (IM) in Seitheke Basa of Dimapur and rescued two abducted civilians, according to PRO, Assam Rifles.
The PRO in a press release alleged that on July 30, Assam Rifles received reports of illegal detention centre being run in a house in the village. “Troops of 32 Assam Rifles carried out search of the suspected house and found two abducted individuals in custody of NSCN (IM) cadres,” the release said. The two were identified as Raju Choudhary and Nayan Bora.
The individuals, the PRO said, “were found bound in chains and were subjected to inhuman and despicable conditions.”
The release said that Raju Chaudhary, the state president of Anti Corruption and Crime Investigation Front (ACCIF), an NGO with office at Purana Bazar was abducted by NSCN (IM) cadres on May 2 and was detained for nearly three months in the illegal detention centre. Raju, according to the Assam Rifles PRO, revealed that he was asked to pay an amount of Rs 20 lakh for his release. Subsequently, after his detention the NGO office was also forcibly shut down by cadres of NSCN (IM), the release claimed.
Meanwhile, Nyan Bora stated that he arrived at Dimapur Railway Station on June 18, 2016 from Furkating to buy clothes for his brother’s shop but was abducted from the railway station by NSCN (IM) cadres, it was alleged. “He also reported that he was subjected to beating for one month and a demand of Rs 5 Lakh as ransom was made to his family for his release,” the release added.
It further informed that six NSCN (IM) cadres, who were running the illegal detention centre, were apprehended by Assam Rifles. They were identified as Sgt Maj Kuhoto Sema, Lance Corporal Angam Pamei, Pvt Ashim Valui, Pvt Akum Yim, Pvt Lipisa Achumi, and Pvt Aleng Tangkhul. Many incriminating documents related to kidnapping/extortion were also recovered from the detention centre, it was stated.
The PRO further said that the rescued individuals witnessed approximately 35 to 40 detainees, “who were subjected to beating and torture and were only released after payment of extortion/ ransom.”
The apprehended cadres alongwith the recovered items and rescued individuals have been handed over to Diphupar Police Station, the Assam Rifles PRO added.
