NSDMA continues damage assessment

Officials verifying reports of disaster and providing relief as per norms and guidelines of Government of India

KOHIMA, APRIL 22 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department on Friday informed that it has been sending its officials to aid the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMA) to physically verify reports of the disastrous incidents and provide relief.

“The NSDMA is very well aware of the prevailing situation and is taking measures to provide immediate relief to the affected districts,” a press statement from Home Commissioner, Neihu C Thur said.

Financial relief is being given to those affected by the calamities as per the norms and guidelines laid down by the Government of India and routed through the DDMAs, the disaster management authority said. It also informed that relief was distributed to the affected citizens of Surohoto, where homes and crops were destroyed by hailstorms. Giving an update on the situation in the affected areas, the NSDMA said the flashflood situation in Tuli was returning to normalcy, however, areas in Chuchu and Ongpangkong circle were yet to return to normal.

In Mon district, paddy fields and plantations were damaged while road from Tobu to Mon has been totally cut off in two locations. It also said reports of more than 20 houses damaged in Ukha village have been received. Hailstorm in the area injured children and wrecked havoc in many villages, it added.

The NSDMA maintained that it is continually receiving ‘damage assessment’ reports from the DDMAs and taking prompt action.

“The public may call on the State Emergency Operation Centre’s toll free no 1070 for any information and assistance. Relay of timely information about the situation at the district level will enable the state machinery to render quick and appropriate assistance as required,” it informed.

Further, the NSDMA also appealed to the people of Nagaland to refrain from spreading rumors of impending disasters as this affects the psyche of the people. However, we may remain vigilant and prepared for any disaster, it said.
