Kohima, September 15 (MExN): Advisor for New & Renewable Energy and NSDMA, Z Nyusietho Nyuthe, convened an emergency meeting with line departments on September 15 to address the severe damage to roads and other infrastructure caused by extreme weather events across the state.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Public Works Department (Roads & Bridges) (National Highways), Water Resources Department, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), the Commissioner of Nagaland, District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMA), and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

Nyuthe stressed on the need for swift action to restore road connections in landslide-affected areas and called for additional machinery to be assigned to disaster-prone areas. Nyuthe urged continued coordination among line departments and monitoring of water levels in vulnerable areas such as the Chathe and Dhansiri rivers. He also called on line departments and NHIDCL to enhance infrastructure resilience and adopt sustainable construction solutions tailored to Nagaland’s hilly terrain to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Joint CEO NSDMA Johnny Rongmei requested the concerned Deputy Commissioners of Chumoukedima and Peren to prioritise maintenance of the Sukhovi–Mhainamtsi road, a critical alternative route due to heavy mudslides and landslides on multiple locations of NH-29. He further requested authorities to allocate maximum resources to repair and maintain this road stretch to ensure smooth flow for heavy vehicle traffic, noting that stationing machinery on standby would help manage traffic flow, reduce congestion, and facilitate smoother movement.

Rongmei also urged field officers, executive engineers, and SDOs from PWD to inspect the road and identify areas requiring immediate attention, specifying necessary resources for repairs in disaster-affected areas.

The District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMA), through video conference, highlighted real-time damages to roads and infrastructure, updated the progress of restoration work, and outlined immediate requirements for relief and support in their respective districts.
