Nagaland State Mineral Development Corporation Limited (NSMDC) came up with a proposal for scientific coal mining in the state.

This is to ensure that coal mining can be done by taking precaution on environment aspect and achieves sustainable utilization of coal resources as well as to create awareness on safe mining practices, according to Annual Administrative Report of NSMDC 2021-22 tabled at the recently concluded 11th session of 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) here.

The report stated that NSMDC has prepared a concept note on Exploratory Model Coal Mine for Khar Coal Block at Mongchen village, Mokokchung district and the proposal has been submitted to the Secretary, Ministry of Coal, Government of India through Geology & Mining Secretariat Kohima.

Construction of mineral link roads to mineral deposits

The report stated that Nagaland in spite of its rich mineral resources, remains economically and industrially backward or lack of infrastructures as the various resources discovered could not be properly investigated by exploratory drilling and detailed studies, thus remained unexplored for viability and exploitation.

The prospect of a mineral rich state and their economic potentiality has remained a dream so far without link roads to the mineral deposits areas.

Link roads to mineral deposits once constructed will facilitate the development and commercial exploitation of the mineral deposits to uplift the state’s economy, the report stated.

“Therefore, the Corporation has proposed for construction of mineral roads (Akash Bridge to Wazeho -36 km), Molen to Molen marble deposit- 10 km) and (Upgradation of the existing road from Pungro to Pokphur – 28 km) to the North East Special Infrastructure Development Schemes (NESIDS) during the financial year 2021-22 for consideration by the government.

NSMDC proposes sand making unit

Nagaland been a developing state, there is a high demand for sand for construction purpose. However, present supply of sand is unable to meet the demand of the state and the sands are brought from Assam to various parts of the state.

The report stated that during monsoon season, scarcity of sand and involvement of certain unscrupulous elements leads exorbitant price rise affecting the general public and also considering the stringent central and state government policy on river sand mining, the Corporation has proposed to set up a sand making unit for exploiting the natural resources in the state.

Concrete block making unit in all districts

The report stated that a project proposal for production of concrete blocks using locally available raw materials was proposed to the state government and central government agency.

The project aims to produce concrete blocks in lieu of bricks for purpose of construction.

It will capitalize on the opportunity to create employment and generate income as well as improve the economy of the people in the state, the report stated.
