NTAC urges legislators to realize their responsibility to the people

DIMAPUR, JULY 14 (MExN): The Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) today expressed “shock and concern” at the “irresponsible” conduct of elected legislators in the state, and lamented that “the elected legislators seem to have totally forgotten their responsibilities for which they were elected but are swayed away by lust for money and power causing the state machineries out of gear and of causing confusion among the general public.”

In a press note today, the NTAC asked the elected legislators to remember that they were elected by the people to work for the welfare of the people and not for money and power.

“The elected legislators should also remember that they are the law makers and highest policy-making body in the state. The post of any elected member is vested with high responsibility and therefore, people expect high moral values from every elected leader.”

It expressed concern that the activities of the legislators during the tenure of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly “have surpassed all moral values of an elected legislator.” “It is high time for the elected legislators to realize their responsibilities and introspect on their conduct and moral values,” it added.

Asks Governor to apply wisdom

The NTAC also said it was “appalled by the casual attitude of the Governor of Nagaland in solving the ongoing political crisis in the state.” “The Governor must realize that immediate initiative and intervention is necessary to avoid any untoward, unpleasant consequences. As the head of the state, the Governor is vested with high obligation and responsibility under the Constitution of India,” it stated.

It said that when the state is facing political crisis, the Governor cannot remain a mute spectator “but he must apply his wisdom swiftly and discharge his constitutional obligations and responsibilities by taking preventive measures before the situation goes out of control.”

The NTAC expressed hope that the Governor and the elected legislators would uphold the basic tenets of democracy and protect it from intrusion of any autocratic motives.
