North Town Higher Secondary School (NTHSS), Chumukedima has completed 25 years. The school commemorated the silver jubilee on March 5 with Lok Sabha MP and former Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio gracing the occasion as the chief guest.
From a thatch house in 1991 to a massive 3-storied RCC building today, the school has come a long way since; along the way shaping the lives of many a young mind. Terming the pioneers of the school as visionaries, Rio, in his address, stated that where NTHSS stands today is the result of the pioneers’ sacrifice and devotion.
“The world today is about quality education, not merely about learning to read and write. I’m proud this school is imparting quality education.” By ‘quality education’, Rio said that it implies a holistic focus to “impart skills and skilling students and become somebody” and not be a liability. At a stage where job avenue in the government set up has been saturated, he held that skills and skill building will empower the present generation of students to be self-reliant.
According to Rio, the notion that “government job is the best option” is now passé and has to be eradicated for good. It has to be sub-planted by an urging that would encourage children to excel in their studies and become employable educated people, he said. Stating, “Ignorance is not an excuse,” he added that moulding and preparing for challenges ahead, while cultivating discipline and integrity must be the mantra.
