NU Hindi dept observe World Indigenous Day 

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 14 (MExN): Research scholars and PG students of Hindi Department, Nagaland University (NU) observed World Indigenous Day on August 12 with talks on the indigenous community. The objective of the program was to preserve indigenous society, culture, promote it and to make aware of the current challenges and problems. 

Dr Anuj Kumar, Assistant Professor, Hindi department, while discussing the written literature of the tribals, underlined its importance that the written literature preserves the language, history of the indigenous people and breaks the prejudice of being labelled as ‘barbaric and uncivilized’ for centuries. 

Along with this, MA students and PhD scholars shared their views on indigenous society and culture from their own experience and point of view. Nanung Nonang and Taba Yasi, scholars from the department and hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, talked about their respective ‘Adi’ and ‘Nyishi’ communities. 

Researcher Chewanglung, from the Zeliang tribe, spoke on their specific religion ‘Hereka’ and underlined the importance of organizing events and competitions related to indigenous people. At the same time, students and research scholars, who were not from the indigenous community, also shared their understanding and experiences, thus providing an opportunity to get acquainted with the views of people from different societies towards indigenous people. 

Earlier, the Head of Department gave a discourse on the development of tribal literature while throwing light on the tribal society. He also talked about the indigenous community of Jharkhand.
