The total number of factories registered in Nagaland increased from 1067 in 2023-24 to 1110 in 2024-25, reflecting a marginal rise of approximately 4.03%.

Similarly, the number of employees grew from 12,467 in 2023-24 to 12,951 in 2024-25, indicating around 3.88% growth, according to the Nagaland Economic Survey 2024-25 tabled during the recently concluded 6th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA).

District-wise, Dimapur recorded the highest number of registered factories at 510, followed by Kohima with 201, Chümoukedima with 178, and Mokokchung with 103.

The lowest numbers were reported in Zunheboto with just one registered entity, followed by two in Kiphire and three in Peren.

In terms of employment, Chümoukedima had the highest number of employees at 4196, followed by 2866 in Dimapur and 1688 in Mokokchung. (See Table)

The figures presented in the survey pertain to factories officially registered under the Factories Act, 1948.

According to the Act, a "factory" is defined as a “premises engaged in a manufacturing process employing 10 or more workers with the aid of power or 20 or more workers without the aid of power.”

The "manufacturing process" under the Act includes “any process for making, repairing, packing, pumping, printing, cold storage, etc.”
Running a factory without registration and a valid licence is a punishable offence under Section 92 of the Factories Act, 1948, carrying a penalty of Rs 1 lakh or two years' imprisonment, or both.

According to the advance estimate of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), the secondary sector — which unusually includes factories — contributed 10.68% to Nagaland's economy in the 2024-25 fiscal year.

The tertiary sector accounted for the largest share at 65.75%, followed by the primary sector at 23.55.

As per the Nagaland Economic Survey 2024-25, the secondary sector encompasses activities involving the transformation of input goods, including manufacturing, construction, electricity generation, gas, water supply and so on.
