Kohima, September 9 (MExN): The Nagaland University Students’ Union, Lumami (NUSU (L)) executives led by its president K. Chumseli Anar met the Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya on September 6 to deliberate on various issues concerning the welfare of the student community.
The NUSU (L) during the meeting submitted a representation to which the Governor has assured to look into the matters seriously and do the best for the student community.
Some of the issues highlighted in the representation are the following:
Health Facility: The campus requires 24 x 7 health facility, to meet 500 plus students and staffs who are residing in the campus. “The health centre is ill equipped in terms of manpower other facilities. At least Chief Medical Officer along with RMO should be in station always, their absence during the weekends and holidays always creates serious problems. This needs to be taken seriously by the authority. The past instances should be a lesson for everyone,” stated the NUSU (L).
Central Library: The students pointed out that there is shortage of books particularly, text books for each departments. Due to the shortage of books, students have to literally ask friends who have taken from the library to return so that they can take, the students lamented. The library also needs to have sufficient manpower, computers and internet facility. It is time administration look into this seriously.
Infrastructure Development: The classrooms and hostel needs immediate renovation, most of the rooms are not habitable particularly during rainy sessions due to leakages and crack walls and roofs everywhere, the life of everyone in the campus are at the risk.
• The hostel needs to be painted periodically; the kitchens in most of the hostel are in pathetic conditions.
• Need proper shopping complex that can serve the interest of the students’ and the staffs who are residing in the campus. The university is incurring huge expenses on transportation yet it is not meeting the need of the students’.
• There is an urgent need for proper university guest house in a campus with dormitory facility.
• There is an urgent need for the construction of footpath towards the women hostel as it becomes very difficult during the rainy session to walk for the classes.
Hostel fencing: Breaking and entering in the hostel and stealing during vacation has been the order in the campus on so many occasions. To avoid such instances hostel fencing becomes a must even for the boys’, therefore the authority may look into this matter and construct the hostel fencing at the earliest. “This will not only contain but give added security to the hostellers,” added the Union in the representation.
Installation of street light: The Union further stated that here is urgency for the installation of more street lights in addition to the existing ones. Those existing ones whenever bulb gets fused should be taken as a routine matter and replaced without waiting for us to write an application. “Here, we insist that the concern officer should stay in the campus and monitor the work on regular basis, not deputing the linesman,” the Union added.
