NVCO appeals to be careful of bank fraudsters

Kohima, May 3 (MExN): The Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) today appealed to all citizens, especially those having bank accounts and ATM cards, to be careful and never give out bank details to people who call on the phone posing as bank officials.

A press release from Media Cell, NVCO informed that the Organisation’s president, who is also legal advisor to the State Bank of India, encountered a person who had been a victim of the fraud. The release recounted that the victim had received a call from somebody who introduced as an official staff of SBI Gauhati Main office. Informing the victim that his ATM is being blocked, the alleged SBI staff asked the victim to give all necessary details of his account, including ATM PIN, to restore the same and he obliged.

Within few minutes, the caller informed him that his ATM has been restored and updated for two years and the same would be SMSed to him. The said SMS came to him as "891679 is your OTP for txn of INR 1999.00 at SBIBUDDY on your SBI debit card ending 0320."

However, sensing something amiss, the victim called up SBI Customer Care number and got confirmation that it was a fraud case and the caller was simply cheating to draw money through his ATM. The SBI Kohima, according to NVCO, has also detected the fraud case and the fraudster tried three times consecutively to withdraw money from the victim’s account, but failed due to insufficient amount.

In this light, NVCO appealed to all to be more careful while pointing out that no official bank staff will call any customer to rectify any bank account or ATM.
