As the country prepares to celebrate Teachers’ Day on September 5, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has released the list of 46 teachers to be conferred National Teacher’s Award.

Among the 46 winners chosen from across the country, Nagaland’s own Satyen Kumar Roy from Mount Moriah School Ungma, Mokokchung is listed to be felicitated in the national capital on Thursday on the ocassion of Teachers Day. The day is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

According to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the purpose of National Award to Teachers is “to celebrate the unique contribution of some of the finest teachers in the country and to honor those teachers who through their commitment and industry have not only improved the quality of school education but also enriched the lives of their students.”

President Ram Nath Kovind will felicitate the winners at a function on September 5.

The MHRD had invited nominations for the award from May 6 to June 25, from which the teachers were selected at three different levels for the award. The first level of selection is scrutinized by a District Selection Committee.

Thereafter, the District Selection Committee sends the selected nominees to a State Selection Committee, which further forwards the selected candidates to an Independent National Jury.

As per MHRD, the two criteria for the selection of winners include:

Objective criteria: Under this the teachers will be awarded marks against each of the objective criteria. These criteria are given the weightage of 20 out of 100.

Criteria based on performance: Under this, teachers will be awarded marks on criteria based on  performance e.g. initiatives to improve learning outcomes, innovative experiments undertaken, organization of extra and co-curricular activities, use of Teaching Learning Material, social mobility, ensuring experiential learning, unique ways to ensure physical education to students etc. These criteria are given the weightage of 80 out of 100.

School teachers and Heads of Schools working in recognized primary/middle/high/higher secondary schools in the Indian Union are eligible for consideration for the Award.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also interacted with the winners of the National Teacher's Award.
