Only link road to Niuland in danger

Dimapur | August 31

The only road link to Niuland sub-division at present via Patkai Christian College is also in danger of being cut off. A section of retaining wall flanking the east bank of the unpredictable Chathe river has fallen off exposing the road to further erosion, or worse, sinking away as vehicular traffic on the said route increase since the collapse of the Chathe bridge at 4th Mile.

The boulder-mortar retaining wall caved in on August 28 with the damaged section estimated to run some 80m. The fallen section begins a few metres after crossing the Chathe river bridge at Chumukedima towards Patkai Christian College and enroute Seithekima and Niuland.

While the affected road section remains motorable, commuters have expressed apprehension on safety with one daily commuter commenting that it would be particularly vulnerable during heavy rainfall.

The PWD (Roads & Bridges) meanwhile informed that it has taken note of the damage and has started necessary proceedings for repair. The Executive Engineer (EE) of Dimapur Division, PWD (R&B) told The Morung Express today that department engineers have surveyed the damaged section and have forwarded a report to the departmental chief for necessary action.

“We have surveyed and prepared an estimate of the projected cost of repair on August 29, which was sent to the head of the department,” said the EE, while adding that repair work would begin as and when they get the go ahead and the necessary fund.

The department of Irrigation and Flood Control also comes into the picture as the said section falls in a riverine area prone to flooding.
