
Demand immediate action against Professor
DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 26 (MExN): Various organizations have condemned the November 25 incident at Nagaland University, Lumami where a male professor allegedly abused a group of masters’ students with offensive languages and physically assaulted a female assistant professor.
The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) strongly condemned the act of violence within an educational institution, calling it a direct threat to the values of responsibility, respect, and integrity upheld by the student body. The union decried the incident as both deplorable and unacceptable, emphasizing that such actions stand in stark opposition to the principles that guide civilized society, particularly in educational settings.
The ANCSU expressed deep concern over the intolerable behavior and attitude of the individual involved, which has fostered an atmosphere of fear and distress within the student community. It called for immediate action, demanding that the professor be terminated from his position to uphold justice and to restore a sense of security within the student and faculty communities.
It further emphasized that any failure to address the matter with the seriousness it warrants could lead to confrontation and retaliation from the student body.
The ANCSU also urged the concerned administration to reinforce Nagaland University's commitment to the educational well-being of its students, ensuring that the institution remains a safe and conducive environment for learning.
The Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU) termed the egregious act as a blatant violation of professional ethics, academic integrity, and human dignity. In a condemnation note, the DNSU expressed shock that the culprit is a habitual offender and wondered why actions were not initiated against him by the authorities in the past. It demanded that the authorities take immediate and decisive action against the professor, including his termination from service.
The Lotha Officers’ Association (LOA) termed the acts committed as barbaric and unbecoming of a intellectual person in a civilized “The cruel disregard and harmful physical act towards a lady intellectual by a male professor deserve strong condemnation by everyone. The culprit must be awarded severe punishment befitting the heinous act so committed in order to deter such occurrences in the future,” the LOA said in a condemnation letter.
It also cautioned that any attempt to deviate from the law of the land to protect the culprit/accused shall be considered a direct confrontation against the Association.
The Podinakup Public Organisation (PPO), an apex body of 10 villages under Lotha Middle Range said the unpardonable act committee by the professor is not only an insult to the individual but a direct attack on the principle of education, respect and safety that underpin the society. Any form of physical assault against any educator is unacceptable and sabotage the sanctity and essence of learning environment, it added.
Denouncing the incident, the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) maintained that the absurd acts of the professor have tremendously hurt the sentiments of the students’ fraternity and has tarnished the image of the University which is popularly recognized for its credibility. “The absence of sense in a highly qualified academician is beyond belief and as such, his presence in the university furthermore is peril to the university at large,” the ASU stated in its condemnation note.
