Oting SIT’s 1-month deadline lapses

To extend or not to extend

Dimapur | January 6

The one month deadline mandated to complete the investigation into the December 4, 2021 Oting killings has expired. Technically, based on the date (December 5) of issue of the order from the Nagaland Chief Secretary, the deadline lapsed either on January 4 or 5.

Even as the deadline lapsed by 1-2 days, no government announcement on the matter was forthcoming, as on January 6.

Meanwhile, when contacted by The Morung Express on Thursday evening, Chief Secretary, J Alam, said that the government will sit on January 7 to arrive at a decision. It would likely be at the Cabinet level.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT), comprising of 5 core members led by an IGP rank officer of the Nagaland Police, was instituted by the state government on December 5, with the ADGP (Law & Order) as the supervisory officer.

The December 5 order from the Chief Secretary also authorized the SIT to “co-opt” other officers from the department, if required. According to an official source, the number of co-opted investigation officers has grown to 14 members.
