Patkai first autonomous college in the NE

DIMAPUR (MExN): Patkai Christian College (PCC), one of the leading educational institutions in the North East, has finally been conferred Autonomy-status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the official endorsement from the Nagaland University (NU) has already been received. According to the official confirmation letter, a copy of which could be obtained by The Morung Express the UGC informed that during its meeting held on June 29, 2005 the reports of the expert committee which had visited PCC on 15 April 2005 was considered and subsequently, had agreed to grant autonomous status to the college based on the reports of the expert committee.

The letter was written to the Registrar NU by Joint Secretary UGC, AK Dogra. The Autonomy status would be in effect for the period from 2005-2006 to 2010-2011.

The UGC also directed the NU to go ahead and issue necessary orders in this regard. The UGC also stated that admissible grant under the scheme would be released to the college by the Deputy Secretary in Charge soon. Consequent to the UGC’s directive, the Vice-Chancellor of NU has endorsed the Commission’s resolution, it was learnt. 

Patkai Christian College, in Chumukedima-Seithekima, had been demanding Autonomy status for the last 2 decades and the endorsement from the NU means that the College would now be a self-governing institution autonomous from the Nagaland University in regard to administration, regulation of Syllabi, admissions as well as evaluating and conducting examinations independently. Talking to The Morung Express earlier the Principal, Judson Rungson expressed happiness at the latest development as he termed the conferment “a big step”. He said that a Master degree in Philosophy would be introduced from the next academic term while the Music course, currently up to Higher Secondary level, would also be upgraded as an elective subject up to BA level. Apart from that, a Fishery course was in the offing he informed.
